Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several approach shafts down to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," Healey commented. "They were among numerous British troops on duty over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

In December, the US military executed what it termed a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
